Now you’ve decided New Zealand is the place for you to live, perhaps you’ve found a skilled job, or you’ve married a New Zealand citizen. Maybe you want to bring your parents or dependent children to live with you here in New Zealand as well.

There are a number of possibilities to be able to apply for residence in New Zealand. We’ve listed below some of the most popular options.

Residence Categories

  • Child of a NZ Citizen of Permanent Resident
  • Child is substantially dependent on parent
  • Under 24 years of age
  • Partner of a New Zealand Citizen of Permanent Resident
  • Lived together for more than 12 months
  • Supported by your partner

Parent of a NZ Citizen of Permanent Resident
This category of visa is currently closed. INZ have not advised when this category will open again

  • You must hold an offer of employment from an accredited employer for a position on the Tier 1 of the Green List
  • Your occupation must meet the specified requirements on the list for the occupation
  • You must be 55 years of age or younger
  • You must meet English language requirements
  • You must hold an offer of employment from an accredited employer for a position on the Tier 2 of the Green List
  • Your occupation must meet the specified requirements on the list for the occupation
  • You have worked in that role for at least 24 months, (from 29 September 2021)
  • You must be 55 years of age or younger
  • You must meet English language requirements
  • You have worked in that role paying at least twice the median wage for at least 24 months, (from 29 September 2021)
  • Your occupation must be with an accredited employer
  • You must be 55 years of age or younger
  • You must meet English language requirements

Business Pathways to New Zealand

If you’re looking to start a new business, revitalise an existing business, or invest in New Zealand, a business migration path may be best for you.
There are two main paths to residence, entrepreneur and investment.

Entrepreneur Categories

If you’ve had experience running a business or senior management experience and have at least NZ$100,000.00 available to invest, then an entrepreneur category visa may be the path for you.

You’ll need to either start a new business or revitalize a business you have experience in. The business should be in the areas of high growth, innovation and/or have export potential.

There are three stages to the Entrepreneur category, and you’ll need to meet the minimum number of points to gain selection for this category.

  • 120 points towards selection
  • NZ$100k + investment funds
  • A solid business plan
  • 12 month start up visa
  • Investment Capital Transferred
  • Business established
  • Business plan realisation
  • Visa valid a further 3 years
  • Business plan realised
    Business & INZ law compliant
  • IELTS 4.0 met
    Indefinite residence visa

Investor Categories

Whether you’re an investor wanting to invest funds or a parent wanting to retire in New Zealand and have as little as NZ$1 Million or more than NZ$10 million, this category could be for you. With a variety of investment options such as bonds, equity in NZ firms, residential property development, equities or venture capital funds, there’s something for everyone.

  • Parent of an NZ Citizen of Permanent Resident
  • An annual income of NZ$60k
  • Investment funds of NZ$1 Million
  • Additional NZ$500k settlement funds
  1. A minimum NZ$5 million to invest.
  2. Invest for 3 years in an eligible product
  3. Spend at least 117 days in NZ per year
  4. Maintain investment for one further year after the investment period end
